Big Things Come in Small Packages

The popular idiom “Big Things Come in Small Packages” can be applied to the month of February. Though it contains the smallest amount of days among the twelve months there are many big things packed into this month. Much of that activity looks ahead with anticipation.

We immediately begin, on February 2nd, focusing our attention on exiting the winter doldrums. On Groundhog Day we look toward a furry rodent in hopes of a sign that will declare only six weeks until Spring!

A few weeks later, during the observance of President’s Day, many will take a mid-winter recess, escaping school and/or work to enjoy warmer climates or other relaxing environs. We look forward to better days!

The church calendar also lifts up big things during this small month. In February we look forward to the Cross as we enter the solemn season of Lent.

On Tuesday, February 13th, we observe Shrove Tuesday, and this year the Church of Our Saviour, Lutheran will be joining our partners in faith at Trinity Lutheran Church and School in Hicksville for a Mardi Gras celebration at their site between 6:00 – 9:00 PM.

February 14th may be only one of 28 days this month but this year it is a big deal. For the first time since 1945 both St. Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday will be observed on the same day. Join us for Holy Communion and the Imposition of Ashes at either 12:00 Noon or 7:00 PM.

During this Lenten season we will once again hold our big “Sacrifice and Serve” guest speaker series. For each 10:00 AM Sunday worship service a special guest will exemplify the Lenten call to “Sacrifice and Serve.” We will learn of those caring for others, and lift them up in prayer for their service, and be inspired to consider personal opportunities to serve God in similar means of thanksgiving.

Here are the scheduled speakers, beginning in February:

February 18th: Addictions
Leslie Mazzotta, Coalition Against Substance Abuse (CASA)

February 25th: Children Support Services
Nancy Travers, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Long Island

March 4th: Social Services
Diane Kelly, New LIFE Center (Lutheran Social Services of NY)

March 11th: Public Service
Honorable Laura Curran, Nassau County Executive

March 18th: Counseling Services
Molly Blancke, Lutheran Counseling Services of New York

The Wednesday following Ash Wednesday, we will also hold mid-week Lenten services each Wednesday, beginning at 7:00 PM. You are invited to participate in the “You Shall Love Your God” themed, brief (approximately one-half hour) worship services.

The planned sessions are:
February 21st: Hear, O Israel
February 28th: You Shall Love the Lord Your God with All Your Heart
March 7th: You Shall Love the Lord Your God with All Your Soul
March 14th: You Shall Love the Lord Your God with All Your Mind
March 21st: You Shall Love the Lord Your God with All Your Strength

There are other big things happening in our congregation during this little month, including the Sacrament of Baptism for Vince Thomas Pesinkowski on February 4th. We will also recognize “Souper Bowl Sunday” that day, requesting all to bring in cans of soup to be distributed through the Lutheran Social Service of New York’s New LIFE Center. In addition, we will be holding our “Wine About Religion” adult theology forum on February 7th, which this month highlights our Lutheran ecclesiology (church structure).

Please join us in these limited days of February and share your big faith in Christ!

Blessings,
Pastor Marc Herbst
